OUR GUIDE TO BEFORE SITTING YOUR  QLD PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST

Pre-Test Checklist

  • Complete hazard perception test
  • Submit your logbook
  • Book your driving test (below)
  • Think about the testing vehicle you wish to use (below)
  • Read message from your driving examiner (right)
  • Complete a defensive driving course (optional)

Logbook Requirements

All too often we see students (thankfully not ours) get to their test and have not had their logbook approved or in some cases not even submitted. 

Tests can be booked before you have even submitted or been approved but must be approved by the time you sit your test. Allow at least 2 weeks (10 business days) for logbooks to be approved once submitted. 

Please visit the QLD Transport website to ascertain your  logbook requirements, if you are over 25yo, you do not need to complete a logbook.

Test Vehicle

Contrary to popular belief, vehicles are not provided by QLD Transport for your driving test. 

You can either: 

1) BYO – use your own or;
2) use a driving school car

Our recommendation is to use the vehicle you are most comfortable with. In most cases this will be the vehicle you did the majority of your 100hrs in. If using your own, check QLD Transport to ensure that you meet the test vehicle requirements. It is your responsibility to provide a suitable vehicle.

 

Message From your Driving Examiner

BELOW IS SOME HELPFUL INFORMATION ON Q-SAFE AND 
WHAT YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO DO

Q-SAFE is designed to evaluate your ability to drive safely and correctly in different driving situations which may include a variety of speed zones.

I will be asking you to undertake a series of driving tasks throughout the assessment. You will be given clear directions in ample time. 

If I don’t give you any specific directions, please just follow the road and be directed by road signs, signals and road markings. 

  • You will be expected to perform the driving tasks when conditions are safe and in accordance with the road rules. ­ 
  • If you have a mobile phone, please ensure it is switched off for the duration of this assessment. ­ 
  • Please make any lane changes that are necessary to follow my directions. ­ 
  • At no time during the assessment will I ask you to perform any driving tasks that are illegal. ­ 
  • You may see me marking the report form during the assessment – please do not assume that an error has occurred. ­
  • If your vehicle is fitted with blind spot mirrors you are still required to conduct shoulder checks to ensure there are no vehicles in the blind spot. ­ 
  • Once the assessment has commenced, I am unable to answer any questions that may influence your driving performance. 

If the vehicle is fitted with driver assist devices (for example GPS, speed alarms, park assist or easy start) please turn these devices off for the duration of the test, where possible or requested.

If you are recording this assessment, the recording device must not have audio capability turned on and must be outward facing in a safe location.

  • You will not be able to access the recording device during the assessment.
  • If using a device other than your mobile phone to record, please ensure your mobile phone is switched off for the duration of this assessment.

At the end of the test I will ask you to accompany me to the debrief area to discuss the outcome of your test.

    (Test Time 2 is usually our most popular)

To also assist in selecting your test centre, we have rated each location with a difficulty score, with 10 being most difficult. Our difficulty score has been produced in consideration of the potential road conditions and routes. Let not difficulty be the only determining factor in selecting your test location. Being familiar with a particular location would be more advantageous than an easier location.

FAQs

What’s the best way to prepare for my driving test?

Whilst lessons with a driving school are not mandatory, they are highly recommended. If you’re ready, treat the test as any other drive with your loved ones or your driving instructor. 

Am I ready for the driving test?

You should be confident enough to pass first time, as the next step is to drive by yourself. Do you feel you’re ready for that?

Is my driving instructor the examiner?

No, driving tests are governed by QLD Transport. Examiners are like your instructors, they are there to help get your licence, not fail you. 

How long do driving tests go for? 

Usually 30mins, in some cases they may go slightly over due to traffic. The time will fly by; so it should should be the least of your worries. 

What is the best day/time time to book for my driving test? 

If you’re ready then it doesn’t matter. You should be able to pass anytime, however anytime before or after peak hour would be nice because no one likes driving in peak hour, not to mention those school zones. It also allows sufficient time to get in our most popular #TestTime 2 pack. 

What is the best location for my driving test? 

If you’re ready then it also shouldn’t matter.
You should be able to pass any where.

However our favourites are:

Zillmere: closest to us
Toowong: we grew up here
Wynnum: most scenic  

What will I need to bring for the test?

a) Your driver licence (QLD Learner, interstate or overseas; if overseas you may need to provide a certified translation) 
b) Photo ID/ Proof of Address (in some cases more documents may be required so bring up to 100 points of identification, especially if you’re from overseas)
(c) A suitable car (refer to “Test Vehicles” above)

Can we get a driving lesson before the test? 

All our Test Time packs include a quick revision; the lesson length is represented by the number; i.e. #TestTime 3, starts with a 2hr lesson, 30 min break then another 1hr  before the test. All other packs do not include a break.
